Work Progresses at Hinson Lake

Renovations are underway on the former High Lake Lounge building at Hinson Lake. Sedberry Construction Company, Inc. was awarded the contract at the August 9, 2005 City Council meeting and commenced work on August 22. The building will be known as the Rotary Lodge once completed. The total cost of renovations is $298,000. The renovation work is being funded by the Rockingham Rotary Club ($50,000), the Cole Foundation ($200,000), and the City of Rockingham ($48,000). The Rotary Lodge will include an office area for canoe rentals and a fishing tackle loaner program; a meeting area; and public restrooms. Work is expected to be completed by the end of January 2006. Construction work on the footbridge across the upper end of Hinson Lake is underway also. City crews are building a 300 foot wooden bridge that will connect walking trails on the north and south side of Hinson Lake. The improvements at Hinson Lake are part of a cooperative effort between the City of Rockingham and the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission to develop a Wildlife Conservation area on approximately 216 acres around Hinson Lake. The entire project is expected to be complete and opened the public in early 2006. The facility will offer opportunities for fishing, canoeing, hiking, picnicking, and wildlife observation.
